Topilas (2016), 13:00 for 4 performers, with harp/piano, guitar, tuned glass, objects, and electronics
In this work I was interested in the flexible narrative that may or may not emerge from the counterpoint of sound-producing physical actions on stage. As part of the performance, the performers precisely tune – and detune – wineglasses with water measured with Erlenmeyer flasks and syringes, creating a shifting layer of harmony. Four soloists take center stage in successions to produce a contrasting layer of activity. Toipilas is Finnish for “recovering patient.” The work was a commission from the 2016 Tampere Biennale festival. |
